The Finance Division has issued a notification of new petrol and diesel prices, effective from October 1, 2025. The price of diesel has increased by Rs4.04 to Rs276.81 per litre, and petrol will now cost Rs268.68 per litre, up by Rs4.07. The revision comes after the government’s routine fortnightly review of fuel rates, which is based on international crude oil prices, currency exchange fluctuations, and import costs.
The Express Tribune reported that the notification was issued late on 30 September, confirming the hike for the first half of October. The report highlighted that the new prices would remain effective until 15 October 2025, after which a fresh review will be conducted based on global oil market trends.

Why Did Prices Go Up?
As highlighted by Geo News, officials noted that the latest hike was largely influenced by rising global oil prices and pressure on the Pakistani rupee, which together pushed up the landed cost of petroleum products.
The government has also clarified that while fuel prices are going up, steps such as the recent cut in LPG rates are aimed at partially offsetting the burden on households and maintaining a balance between revenue needs and public relief.
Impact On Citizens & Economy
Fuel price hikes have broad effects, including pressure on inflation and transport costs.
Transport Costs: Diesel is critical for trucks, buses, and agricultural machinery. Higher diesel prices push up the cost of moving goods across the country.
Cost of Living: For ordinary citizens, particularly motorbike and car owners, commuting costs rise immediately. This adds to inflationary pressure on food and essential items.
Sectoral Pressure: Agriculture, manufacturing, and logistics face higher operating costs.
Public Sentiment: Frequent fuel hikes, especially amid rising inflation, fuel discontent among the population.
